Ready for Deer Season — Hearing Lobe, Smell Cone, See Hint
Live on the App Store as Deer Awareness. A wind-biased hearing lobe, downwind smell cone, and a rough see hint for the woods. Export KML for Google Earth or TAK.

A static map for playing with how far a deer might hear or smell you, on a real Virginia field–woods edge near Thornton Gap / Panorama (Skyline Drive corridor).
Try the browser preview. Drag the “you” pin. Toggle hearing presets. Wind for the smell cone and the hearing lobe comes from the same Open-Meteo surface feed Windmaster uses; you can still override it by hand. Export KML downloads the current pin, hearing lobe, smell cone, and see ring for Google Earth or TAK. The file itself is offline geometry; only the weather fetch needs a network.
Released and ready to use. Take it to the woods: wind-biased hearing lobe, smell cone, see hint, live Open-Meteo wind when the pin moves, KML out to Earth or TAK. Treat the distances as ASSUMED model knobs, not a field trial.
Tell me what you think. If the hearing lobe, smell cone, or anything else feels off where you hunt, or you have an idea for it, send it through the contact form. I read every one.
What the overlays are. The orange hearing lobe is an ASSUMED wind-biased polygon: farther downwind, shorter upwind, crosswind in between. Calm wind stays near a circle; stronger wind stretches it. It is not a field trial. The isotropic base follows the preset (careful footfalls default near 50 m before that stretch). The blue smell cone is a downwind scent plume: direction from wind FROM, range a model knob (ASSUMED), not measured. Live Open-Meteo winds aim the cone and the hearing lobe; if the fetch fails both fall back to ASSUMED defaults. The teal dashed see ring is an ASSUMED woods visual radius, scaled down when that same fetch reports fog or precip. It is not terrain line-of-sight. The preview’s labeled still still shows the older hearing ring; the live map is the lobe.
This is a model, not magic. Heffner & Heffner (2010) is an audiogram, not a hunter-distance curve. Hearing distances use assumed source levels, an assumed threshold, and an assumed wind stretch. Smell geometry stays ASSUMED — live weather only aims the cone. The see radius stays ASSUMED — live weather only scales it for fog or precip. Every knob is labeled. KML descriptions repeat which parts are LIVE Open-Meteo and which are ASSUMED.
Optional later: the same geometry as an ATAK plugin. The KML export is the file you can open in TAK today. Not hunting tactics beyond awareness geometry.
