Deer Awareness
Deer Awareness — Privacy Policy
No account, sign-in, ads, or analytics SDK. Location is used only when you allow it. Stand notes and photos stay on your iPhone. We do not sell personal information.
Deer Awareness (“the App”) is published by Marshall Tyler Frith. This policy explains what information the App uses.
Summary
- No account, sign-in, ads, analytics SDK, or backend that stores your notes.
- Precise location is used only when you allow it, to center the map and to request weather, wind, and pressure for that place.
- You can deny location and still place yourself by address, MGRS, or lat/lon.
- Stand notes and optional photos stay on the iPhone. They leave the phone only if you use the system share sheet.
- We do not sell personal information.
Information the App uses
Precise location. If you grant Location permission (When In Use), the App uses your precise location to show a blue dot, to aim the compass heading-up mode, and to request wind and weather from Open-Meteo for where you are. The hunter pin can stay separate from that dot. The App does not track location in the background.
Network requests from your device. The App, or its embedded map, may contact:
- Open-Meteo for wind, weather, and sea-level pressure at the hunter pin or your location. Wind speed on the 6-hour timeline is converted on the phone to mph or km/h. The request itself still asks for meters per second.
- Aviation Weather for the nearest METAR altimeter setting, used as another sea-level pressure reading.
- OpenStreetMap tiles and Nominatim geocoding when you search.
- Esri World Imagery for the satellite basemap.
- USGS 3DEP elevation and NHDPlus HR streams when you turn on crossings, for about a 2 km box around the pin.
Those requests go from your device. We do not operate a backend that stores your location, stand notes, or photos.
Phone barometer. While the App is open, the phone’s barometer may be read as a rising or falling trend. That reading stays on the device. Sea-level inches of mercury come from the weather report, not from the phone sensor.
Notifications. If you turn on pressure alerts, the App schedules local notifications from the forecast already on your phone. There is no remote push server. iOS may refresh that forecast in the background for the saved pin. That refresh does not keep location running.
Stand notes and photos. A note is saved for the crossing you opened, with the time and the coordinates. An optional photo from the camera or the photo library is stamped with that time and those coordinates and stored in the App’s Documents folder on the device. There is no account and no in-app feed. Sharing uses the iOS share sheet only, and only when you tap Share. Wind units, the basemap, layer toggles, and the pin label are stored on the device as well. They are not uploaded.
Exports you choose. Export KML stays on your device until you share it. Open in… builds a smaller KMZ with the wind line, the scent cone, and the sound lobe only. That file does not include crossing markers. It stays on the device until you hand it to another app.
